How to choose carbide drill bits for CNC production

Six questions before you pick a series
- Workpiece family — steel, stainless, hardened, aluminum/non-ferrous, or mixed lots? Material drives edge prep and often which series to open first.
- Hole spec — diameter, depth, tolerance, exit condition, and whether the hole is finished by drill alone or drill-then-ream.
- L/D ratio — shallow production holes vs deep / guided holes. High L:D usually means a different series than a short twist drill.
- Coolant reality — flood only, through-tool capability, mist, or dry/MQL constraints on the machine you will run.
- Setup stability — rigid CNC vs less stable fixture; peck vs continuous; bushing/guidance available or not.
- Commercial path — off-the-shelf series trial, distributor stock program, or drawing-based OEM/private-label. If drawings exist, skip browsing and RFQ.

When to stop comparing and send a drawing
- Tolerance, position, or surface finish is tighter than a catalog twist drill will hold alone.
- Multi-diameter, flat bottom, or combination drill-ream features are required in one tool.
- You already have a problem tool print, chip photo, or scrap mode from the current process.
- Volume needs repeat supply with locked geometry—not a one-off retail set.
Those cases belong on solid carbide drills and the RFQ checklist, not on another long “bits” article.

Is this the same as the series hub?
No. The hub lists industrial series. This page only helps you decide which inputs matter and where to click next.
Where are speeds and feeds?
Not on this guide. Use the relevant series page or the solid carbide drill / technical resources after the hole is defined—generic S&F tables without setup data mislead more than they help.
Retail multi-packs vs industrial tools?
XRZ pages target CNC / production holemaking and distributor or OEM programs. If you need a consumer kit, this site is the wrong catalog.
