Boxes & Brackets — Multi-Hole Patterns without Drift

Structural parts fail quality gates when hole-to-hole variation creeps across a batch. Standardize the drill recipe, fixture repeatability, and only ream holes that the print makes critical. For large patterns, tell us which holes are datums vs clearance so the quote doesn’t over-tool every opening.
PATTERN RISK

Why multi-hole boxes drift

  • Accumulated position error across a long pattern
  • Drill wear that makes later holes open larger than early ones
  • Fixture flex or clamp variation between cycles

Drill vs ream process rules: see standard drill–ream paths. Shaft/sleeve/flange features: see the shaft family page.

WHICH HOLES TO REAM

Critical set vs clearance set

  • Ream locating pins, bearing-related openings, and print-critical diameters.
  • Drill-only most clearance / mounting holes when the band allows.
  • Label the critical set on the hole chart—do not assume every hole needs a reamer.
TOOL LIFE PLANNING

Changeover windows—not fake hour claims

Plan tool change by hole count, wear indicators, and first-article checks—not a universal “hours of life” promise. Cast boxes with draft or skin can accelerate first-hit wear; send process notes with the RFQ.

SCOPE BOUNDARY

EV / motor housings

If the workpiece is truly an EV motor or reducer housing on a production line, use the future Automotive solutions hub instead of this general-mechanical page. This page stays on everyday boxes, brackets, and structural mechanical patterns.

FAQ

Structural holes FAQ

Ream every hole in the pattern?

Usually no—ream the critical set only.

Cast boxes with draft/skin?

Skin and draft affect first-hit wear—send casting/process notes with the RFQ.

Same tools as EV aluminum housings?

If it is truly an EV housing, point to the Automotive hub rather than this page.

Combination drill-ream on brackets?

Only when the process window is stable—otherwise keep drill and ream separate.

RFQ

Send the hole chart with critical vs clearance marked

We quote carbide drills for the pattern and reamers/PCD only where the print demands it.
