Cylinder Head Hole Machining — Guide Bores, Tools, RFQ

Cylinder head hole jobs—especially valve guide and related precision bores—need a drill-then-ream (or guided PCD) path matched to material and true position, not a generic automotive drill. XRZ maps guide and related holes to PCD guide-pad/step reamers and carbide drills with coolant suited to depth and chip. Deep-hole peck strategies stay on the drill product/Knowledge boundary; this page owns the cylinder-head hole RFQ path. Send the hole chart via Custom Cutting Tool RFQ. Send Your Drawing (cylinder-head print · hole chart · critical guides marked) The best ending is not a catalog “automotive drill” for every guide. It is a hole chart we both read the same way, written first-article accept, and someone still answering when first-off TP drifts. ---

Transmission-housing workpiece overview is a different URL: `/transmission-housing-machining` (sibling · live). Parent hole-type guide: Engine & Transmission Holes. Industry entry: Automotive Powertrain.

Aluminum head path: drill → measure → ream / PCD

  • Create-hole with a carbide drill matched to aluminum and coolant reality — Solid Carbide Drill / Carbide Drill for Aluminum.
  • Measure incoming band and position before freezing finish allowance.
  • Finish critical guides with a Custom PCD Reamer (guide-pad / step geometry when the print and process justify) when diameter, roundness, or TP demand it.

Not every related hole needs PCD. Mark fit-critical guides on the chart; leave non-gauge openings on the create-hole path when the process allows. Soft pre-hole: PCD reamer pre-hole quality. Soft Si%: Aluminum silicon content — PCD vs carbide.

When guided / step PCD vs standard ream

Product entry: Custom PCD Reamer. Do not dump the full reamer catalog on this page.

Thin-wall / interrupted / deep-hole boundary

Thin walls, inclined entries, and interrupted exits change drill posture and burr risk—diagnosis lives on Knowledge, not as a second essay here: Inclined / cross / thin-wall drilling · Blind / through / cross reaming · Helical vs straight coolant. Deep-hole / peck boundary (one sentence): when L/D and chip escape leave the standard drill path, use the deep-hole drill product and Knowledge boundary—Deep-hole L/D, peck, chip escape · Deep-Hole Carbide Drill—do not turn this cylinder-head page into a peck encyclopedia.

Do valve guide holes always need PCD reaming?

No. PCD (including guided/step forms) belongs when diameter, roundness, finish, or TP demand a controlled finish after a measured pre-hole—especially on aluminum heads. Some ferrous or non-critical related holes stay on carbide create-hole or carbide finish paths under a written process. Mark critical guides and send material via Custom Cutting Tool RFQ.

What hole-chart fields do you need for a cylinder head RFQ?

Critical guides marked, material/Si% or ferrous grade, Ø/depth/tol/TP, blind vs through, pre-hole/allowance, holder/runout/coolant, and sample acceptance characteristics. Upload via Custom Cutting Tool RFQ.

When should deep-hole drill strategy replace a standard drill path?

When depth-to-diameter and chip escape leave the standard create-hole path—use the deep-hole product/Knowledge boundary, not a peck essay on this page. Soft: Deep-hole L/D, peck, chip escape · Deep-Hole Carbide Drill. This URL still owns the cylinder-head hole RFQ path.

How does this page differ from the engine & transmission holes guide?

Engine & Transmission Holes owns cross-part hole-type paths (material fork, TSC/ream cues). This page owns the cylinder-head workpiece—guide/related holes, tool match, and hole-chart RFQ. Use both without treating either as a peck encyclopedia.
