Carbide Drills for Hardened Steel—Hardness Window First

Hardened-steel carbide drills gated by measured HRC/HB in the drill zone.

HRC / HB in the drill zone

Measured hardness before the carbide lip enters

Hardened-steel holes are gated by the hardness window in the drill zone and whether the edge survives entry. Austenitic stringy chips are not the lead risk here—send those to the stainless series.

Window checklist

  • HRC or HB measured where the drill actually cuts
  • Case depth vs through-hardened
  • Spot/center prep if entry chips
  • Prior edge-chip photos

Hardened intake

  1. Hardness number + method
  2. Hole Ø / depth
  3. Entry prep plan
  4. Coolant / peck notes
  5. Holder rigidity

Hardened FAQ

Only “hard steel” on the PO?

Insufficient—measure or estimate the window with process notes.

304/316 chips nesting?

Use the stainless series.

Hardness number ready?

Hardened RFQs start from the drill-zone window, then prep.
