PCD Reamer Chatter: Diagnosis Before You Change Geometry
Chatter marks on a PCD-reamed bore look like a geometry problem—until a long stickout or soft holder is still shaking the finish edge.
This page is a diagnosis order for reamer chatter and vibration marks. It is not a hole-accuracy encyclopedia (hole accuracy & surface finish) and not a drill stickout manual—though you still measure holder runout first. No universal RPM charts and no life %.
What chatter looks like vs lobing / BUE smear
| Pattern | Clue | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Regular vibration bands / washboard | Dynamic instability | Stickout, speed, engagement |
| Lobed / polygonal size | Incoming path / multi-edge follow | Pre-hole quality — pre-hole quality |
| Smear / sticky patches | Adhesion more than tone | Coolant/edge; see also BUE control |
Wrong pattern → wrong fix. Photos beat adjectives.
Measure holder, stickout, and runout first
Measure assembled runout at production stickout before you open the reamer drawing. Long overhang and poor clamping drive finish chatter that geometry changes cannot buy out.
Drill-oriented setup depth still applies to the holder stack: Stickout & Runout—use it for measurement practice, then return here for finish-ream diagnosis.
Speed, engagement, and stock mm
Light rubbing stock or uneven allowance can excite vibration; heavy stock raises force. Size stock with Allowance & Pre-Hole Size; do not paste a fake RPM table into this article. Change one variable at a time and record the bore photo.
When geometry or guide pads enter the talk
Only after setup and stock are stable: edge count, lead, guidance/pads, and body stiffness. Product path: Custom PCD Reamer. Cost framing if offsets/scrap dominate: Cost per Accepted Hole.

Send chatter photos, measured stickout/runout, speed/feed used, allowance note, and drawing via Custom Cutting Tool RFQ. Soft: reamer RFQ checklist.
Frequently Asked Questions
### Are chatter marks the same as lobing?
Not always—lobing often tracks incoming hole form; chatter tracks vibration. Separate them with photos and pre-hole checks.
Should we redesign the reamer first?
No—measure stickout/runout and stock first.
Can we use drill stickout articles here?
For how to measure the holder stack, yes; finish chatter still needs reamer stock/engagement notes on this page.
What to send XRZ?
Photos, stickout/runout, parameters used, allowance, drawing → RFQ.
