Drill Mills for Drilling and Chamfering

Check the operations supported by a specific drill mill before selecting dimensions for drilling, milling, or chamfering tasks.

  • Check the operations matrix before sizing the tool
  • State tip angle as included or one-side
  • Do not infer deep-hole capacity from the product name

Drill mill structure

Diagram tip, end cutting edges, and peripheral flutes. A drill mill is not an unconditional synonym for a general end mill. For broad end-mill families, use carbide end mills; for dedicated chamfer tools, see chamfer mills.

Illustration: drill mill tip geometry with axial drill, side mill, and chamfer operation zones labeled
Illustration: tip zones vs allowed operations. Status per series requires engineering basis.
  • Tip / point Controls axial entry when allowed; angle convention must be stated.
  • End edges Affect plunge and floor quality when the series supports it.
  • Peripheral flutes Side milling capacity is series-specific — not implied by the product name.
  • Chamfer lands Only when designed in; otherwise use a dedicated chamfer mill.

Drilling, milling, and chamfering scope

Each series gets an operations matrix: axial entry, side milling, chamfer — allowed / needs review / not supported. Engineering must supply the basis; this page does not invent a universal “yes” grid.

Tip angle and flute count

Tip angle, flute count, and cutting length must match the drawing. Always state whether the tip angle is the included angle or a one-side angle.

Boundary reminder

This page does not replace the full end-mill catalog. If the duty is primarily peripheral milling in aluminum or steel, start at the end-mill hub and specialty pages instead.

Hole depth and rigidity limits

Hole depth, entry method, material, and clamping enter the boundary note. Do not infer deep-hole capacity from the product name alone.

Custom combinations and RFQ

Custom forms should let buyers select the actual operation mix and mark start/stop positions on the drawing. Review order: capability first, then dimensions.

Drill mills FAQ

Can a drill mill plunge axially into solid material?

Only when the specific geometry and series allow axial entry. Treat axial drilling, side milling, and chamfering as separate cells in the operations matrix — “drill mill” in the name does not prove deep-hole drilling capacity.

Can drilling and chamfering be combined in one tool?

Sometimes, when the tip and chamfer lands are designed for that combination and the print’s start/stop positions are clear. Send the feature drawing with start and end marks for capability review before locking dimensions.

How should tip angle be specified?

State whether the angle is the included (point) angle or a one-side angle. Ambiguous angle callouts delay selection — mark the drawing or note the convention in the RFQ.

Is every “end mill drill bit” search a drill mill?

No. Some queries mean a standard end mill, a spot/chamfer tool, or a combination tool. HENTRY keeps this page on drill-mill / chamfer boundaries and routes general end mills to carbide end mills.
