What Inspection Pack to Require for a Custom PCD Reamer

You shortlisted two PCD reamer makers. Both sent polished photos and a price. Neither named which diameters, which runout position, or which edge note ships with the tool. The quote looks complete until someone asks what you will accept on the dock—and the thread goes silent.

This page is the buyer inspection pack: which records and fields to require from a custom PCD reamer manufacturer before sample or production PO. It is not a plant tour (how PCD reamers are made). It is not a capability photo set (manufacturing quality evidence). Watch the edge on the cutting-edge inspection video; use this list for the paper that travels with the tool.

Short answer

Before you approve a sample or a production PO, require an inspection pack that matches the bore job—not a generic polish photo. At minimum: cutting diameter / profile checks, assembled or tool runout where the drawing or control plan calls it, edge-condition notes, and the acceptance criteria you agreed in writing. Tie the pack to sample validation and the RFQ checklist fields (drawing, material, scrap mode). Send XRZ the bore requirement plus what you already measure in-house for a quote or trial (Custom Cutting Tool RFQ).

1. Why an inspection pack beats “looks sharp” photos

A sharp photo proves lighting and a camera angle. It does not prove the finish Ø on the approved revision, the runout position your process uses, or that the edge you will cut with was the edge that was inspected.

Require the pack because:

  • Dock arguments die faster when actuals, positions, and revision IDs are already written.
  • Sample release is a contract, not a vibe—same idea as sample validation.
  • Capability photos belong on manufacturing quality evidence; they support trust but do not replace a field list on the PO.
  • Incoming IQC needs something to check against—not a brochure PDF.

If the supplier only offers “we 100% inspect,” ask: inspect *what*, against *which drawing*, with *which report fields*, and who signs pass/fail.

2. Core fields to require

Ask for records that name the characteristic, the method family, the actual (or attribute result), and the accept rule. Heuristic field card—not an XRZ universal micrometre table:

Field groupRequire at leastWhy it bites later
Identity / traceabilityTool ID or serial/batch · approved drawing + revision · customer / job referenceA “same reamer” without rev is a different grind
Cutting Ø / profileCritical finish Ø (and steps if multi-step) · named profile / length features on the drawing · actual vs limitOversized or short land shows up as scrap, not as a photo
Runout / concentricityValue · where measured (near cutting section, pad/land if used) · tool-only vs agreed assembly scopeComponent TIR ≠ the stack you will run; see also presetting / assembled runout
Edge conditionVisual / optical note on PCD lips (nick, chip, raised braze) · photo or video ID if agreedDock “looks fine” without a named check becomes tribal memory
Coolant / features (when drawn)Passage continuity / outlet review if through-coolant is on the drawingBlind ports fail on the spindle, not on the brochure
Docs / sign-offInstrument or method family · inspector / date · pass/fail vs written accept · CoC if your plant requires itPass without actuals is weak in an audit

Optional when the project asks: blank / body material certs, balance note for specified shanks, preset length/Ø offsets if included in scope.

Do not treat a stock OEM catalogue µm slogan as your accept table. Write the plant number on the drawing or control plan. Manufacturing gates for a new tool still sit on how PCD reamers are made; this page only names what the buyer should receive.

3. Enough for sample vs enough for production release

Sample / first-article depth exists to prove the process and the revision before you load volume. Require:

  • Full critical characteristics on the approved drawing (named Ø/profile, runout position, edge note).
  • Written pass/fail against the same accept list you will use on first-off.
  • Traceability: tool ID, drawing rev, who signed.

That is the ownership idea behind sample validation: write accept before the argument.

Production lot depth can be lighter *only if* the sample gate already locked the revision and accept list. Typical pattern (plant-specific—write yours):

  • Critical finish Ø and runout (or the subset named on the control plan) on each tool or on a documented sampling plan.
  • Lot/serial + CoC referencing the same drawing rev.
  • Retain the inspection report ID with the traveler.

Do not skip the sample pack and hope production CoC language will invent missing fields. Do not demand a full aerospace AS9102 encyclopedia on every catalog spare unless your PO quality clause says so—scope the depth to the bore risk.

After reconditioning, treat the tool as a new offset / requalify event: re-check the fields that move when stock comes off (regrind / requalify), then re-preset (presetting checklist).

4. After manufacturer evaluation—before the RFQ checklist

This pack is a sub-task of manufacturer shortlisting (see how to evaluate a custom PCD reamer manufacturer), not a replacement for it.

1. Score the maker on engineering response, process transparency, and evidence habits → how distributors evaluate a PCD reamer manufacturer.

2. Confirm commercial / risk items on the high-quality PCD reamer buying checklist.

3. Lock the inspection pack fields (this page) into the sample or PO quality note.

4. Fill application fields on the PCD Reamer RFQ Checklist—drawing, material, bore, scrap mode, holder, coolant.

5. Product geometry and options: Custom PCD Reamer · hub PCD reamers.

Ask the maker for a redacted sample report layout before the first PO. You are checking field names and revision discipline—not fishing for another plant’s private numbers.

---

5. From written accept to sample, PO, and re-inspect after service

Service is the loop, not a slogan:

1. Collect bore requirement, scrap mode, and the inspection fields you already use in-house.

2. Write acceptance (Ø/profile, runout position, edge note, sample quantity / rounds) before metal cuts.

3. Sample against that list → release or iterate (sample validation).

4. Produce against the locked revision; retain report ID with lot/serial.

5. After regrind, requalify the moved fields and re-preset before volume (regrind · presetting).

XRZ reads the pack with the drawing: we do not start by inventing a sharper diamond when the missing piece was an unnamed runout position. Send the bore data and your in-house measure list → Custom Cutting Tool RFQ.

Next step

The useful ending is a quality note that already names Ø, runout position, and edge—not another glossy lip photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum inspection pack for a custom PCD reamer?

Drawing + revision, tool ID or batch/serial, critical cutting Ø / profile actuals, runout with measurement position when relevant, an edge-condition note, and a signed pass/fail against written accept. Add coolant-feature checks when they are on the drawing. Photos alone are not the pack.

Do I need the same pack for a sample and a production lot?

Not always the same *depth*. Sample / first-article should cover the critical characteristics and lock accept. Production can follow a documented sampling or criticals-only plan after that lock—still with lot/serial and retained report ID. Do not skip sample fields and invent them later on a CoC line.

How is this different from machine capability photos?

Capability pages show equipment and evidence habits (manufacturing quality evidence). This page is the buyer require-list of records and fields that should travel with the tool or the sample shipment. You need both; they are not substitutes.

What should I send XRZ with the inspection requirements?

Bore / drawing / material, scrap mode, the inspection fields and positions you already use, and whether you are quoting sample or production. Use the RFQ checklist → Custom Cutting Tool RFQ. Product: Custom PCD Reamer. ---
